GROUP CLASSES

At Music City Fencing Club, we offer a variety of Group Classes designed to reinforce the mechanics of fencing in a fun group setting while giving students a good physical and mental exercise.  Fencing is the perfect sport for virtually any age group, and helps maintain a healthy body, promotes self-confidence, develops good sportsmanship, instills self-discipline, and can help greatly with college admissions. Group Classes are designed to accompany Private Lessons. Fencers looking to progress their skills should have a combination of weekly Group Classes and Private Lessons.

BEGINNERS: Must complete an Intro 4 or Intro 8 Private Lesson Package before they’re eligible to attend Group Classes.

Kids: Fence 4 Fun (Ages 5 - 9)

Our Kids: Fence 4 Fun Class is a great way to introduce children, ages 5-9 years old, to the sport of fencing! This class will focus on developing the physical skills required for fencing, by introducing fun games and activities to young students. It reinforces the fundamental fencing movements, and introduces basic fencing concepts, allowing students to develop with other children in a safe and fun environment.   All equipment is provided.

Students in this class also must have at least a Non-Competitive Membership with USA Fencing. After completing any combination of 25 Private Lessons and Group Classes, 8 & 9 year old students are eligible to be promoted to the Kids: Next Step Class. Advancement typically takes 3-6 months.

Kids: Next Step (Ages 8 & 9)

Our Kids: Next Step Class is designed for young fencers who would like to take their fencing to the next level.  This class focuses on preparation for competition and helps young fencers develop their fencing game through drills and bouting.

Students in this class must have a Competitive Membership with USA Fencing, and begin attending regular competitions. After turning 10 years old, kids can advance to the Intro and/or Intermediate Classes.

Intro Class  (Ages 10 - 19)

Our Intro Class is designed for fencers who are new to the sport or have limited experience.  Students will learn basic rules and safety practices, as well as introductory footwork and blade-work. Classes will include games and activities designed to help develop speed, physical and mental agility, and decision making. Students will also have the opportunity to gear up with electronic scoring gear and fence with each other. Equipment is provided.

Students in this class also must have at least a Non-Competitive Membership with USA Fencing. After completing any combination of 50 Private Lessons and Group Classes, and attending at least 1 Local tournament, students are eligible to be promoted to the Intermediate Class. Advancement typically takes 4-6 months.

Intermediate Class (Ages 10 - 19)

Our Intermediate Class is the next step for fencers who would like to increase their training intensity, and prepare to become competitive athletes.  It provides students with a deeper understanding of the skills they learned in the Intro Class, and provides an opportunity to practice more complex actions with students of similar skill. Students are required to have their own uniform and electric equipment.

Students in this class also must have a Competitive Membership with USA Fencing, and begin attending regular competitions.  After completing any combination of 100 Private Lessons and Group Classes, and attending at least 1 Regional and 1 National level tournament, students are eligible to be promoted to the Advanced Competitive Class. Advancement typically takes 8-12 months.

Advanced Competitive Class (Ages 12 and up)

Our Advanced Competitive Class is designed for advanced fencers who have been fencing for at least 1 year (exceptions can be made at the discretion of a coach), and are competing at the Regional and National levels.  This class focuses on developing athletes into highly competitive fencers by coaching them through advanced techniques and providing additional depth to their training regimen.  Speed, strength and agility training are also heavily incorporated into classes in order to bring athletes to peak performance in their physical game. Students in this class are required to have a Competitive Membership with USA Fencing, and are expected to be training 3-4 times/week including weekly Private Lessons and Group Classes (including Conditioning & Controlled Bouting classes), and attending no less than 1-2 tournaments each month.

Adult Class (Ages 20 and up)

Our Adult Classes are designed to provide a time for our adult members to train together. Classes will combine physical and technical training in addition to bouting. Beginners (after completing an Intro 4 or Intro 8 pack of lessons) and experienced adult fencers are encouraged to attend this class.

Conditioning Class (Ages 10 and up)

Our Conditioning Class will help build speed, strength and agility. Fencers must have great body control, including the ability to be explosive and change direction quickly. Drills and workouts will focus on the physical aspect of athlete development.

Controlled Bouting (Ages 10 and up)

Our Controlled Bouting Class provides an opportunity for fencers to bout under the direct supervision of a coach who will provide real-time feedback. This class may also include specific bouting instruction by the coach designed to help fencers build confidence in their actions during real fencing bouts. Currently this class is reserved for Intermediate & Advanced Competitive fencers only; other must request permission from a coach to attend.
